March 13, 1836 The Great Runaway Scrape

March 13, 1836. On this day Sam Houston learned from Alamo survivor Susannah Dickinson of the fate of the defenders. Santa Ana was only one day from Gonzales. Sam Houston having no other choice, torched the city of Gonzales. The citizens along with the current Texian Army retreated eastward.

These photos are of the first campsite just east of Gonzales Texas on the retreat that became to be know as the Great Runaway Scrape.

The Live Oak tree is known as the Sam Houston Oak.

Thus began the next phase of the Texas Revolution.

Remember The Alamo!
